What is a Retreat Center?

Retreat Centers offer Catholics and non-Catholics alike the opportunity to pray, worship, study, and learn about developing one's relationship with God. This article will explore what a retreat center is, the history of retreat centers, programming for retreats, and considerations for finding the right retreat center.

What is a Spiritual Retreat Center?

A retreat center is a place where the believer can rest in God. Many Catholic orders and dioceses offer specific centers with programming, staff, and accomodations where Catholics, other Christians, or anyone interested in increasing spiritual development is welcome.

Day retreats, weekend retreats, or extended retreats are all options where the retreatant, a person on retreat, can relax, pray, and center on God's will in his or her life.

Retreat centers don't just offer clean, quiet places to rest and pray. Various programming — spiritual direction, contemplative prayer, history of spirituality, the liturgy — enriches faith through education, prayer, self-awareness, and worship.

History of Retreat Centers for Religion

Retreat centers are places designed to nurture one’s relationship with God through prayer. In the Christian tradition, retreat centers for all believers are a relatively recent phenomena. For centuries, monks and nuns would seek God in quiet and solitude.

Today, any believer seeking to find God and rest can go on a religious or spiritual retreat at one of the many retreat centers available.

What to Do on a Religious Retreat

Retreat Centers offer many programs for the believer to explore his or her relationship with God. Spiritual direction is a common option on retreat. Spiritual direction is a meeting with a trained spiritual guide to pray and seek God’s guidance in one’s life. Spiritual direction has a rich tradition in monastic spirituality and is a popular resource for many seeking support in their journeys with God.

Contemplative prayer is another retreat program. Contemplative practices, such as Centering Prayer or Lectio Divina, invite the believer to rest in God through silent prayer or meditating on a word or phrase from Holy Scripture. Many centers offer training in this type of prayer as well as specific classes and retreats with these practices as themes.

Many retreat centers have extensive grounds with gardens, grottos, and stunning views from nature. A long walk with a journal can be relaxing and insightful as the mind unwinds with no where in particular to go.

Some centers offer an outdoor or indoor Labyrinth. A Labyrinth is a maze one can walk and pray for increased awareness and connection with God.

The body, too, can relax on retreat. Many centers offer certified massage therapists or Reiki practitioners to give the body special care and attention. Body, mind, and spirit are all nurtured and noticed with various programming at a retreat center.

How to Find a Retreat Center
Many religious communities in the Catholic Church offer retreat center programming. Join a local center’s mailing list and be aware of upcoming events. Many lists of retreat centers are available online as well. Word of mouth- asking a minister, friend, or others at a retreat-may be the best way to seek out new places to make a retreat.
Retreats can be an important time for Christians to stop and check in with God in the midst of a busy life. For believers busy with family, work, and the other stresses of a modern life, finding time for a retreat can be a real lifesaver. Add to Technorati Favorites Bookmark and Share
